August 23rd, 2008: 7th Annual Wayzgoose, School of Visual Concepts, Seattle
The School of Visual Concepts’ 7th Annual Wayzgoose, celebrating the time-honored art of letterpress printing, will reappear Saturday, August 23 from 1 to 6 pm
at SVC’s Seattle location.
For those who aren’t familiar with a Wayzgoose, it’s a tradition in the letterpress world that dates back to the 17th Century, when printers would serve a feast to their staff in recognition of the impending shorter days of fall and winter which would require the difficult work of handsetting type by candlelight.
At the SVC Wayzgoose, there will be neither geese nor candles, but some interesting new wrinkles are being added this year:Steamroller Letterpress Smackdown
: Local design firms will be challenged to pro
duce a poster which will then be printed in the SVC parking lot with a two-ton steamroller used in place of the traditional printing press. (See one in action here.)Northwest Invitational Letterpress Show
: Letterpress Printing from some of the top designers and letterpress shops in the area will be exhibited in the SVC Gallery.Letterpress Marketplace
: Artists will be on hand selling letterpress posters, broadsides, cards, books, and other ephemera and promoting their studios.Equipment Swap

018 Georgia-Pacific property and driving school
Facing due north, looking over rooftops of Crow's Nest condominiums, Georgia-Pacific property in center of photo. Large open flat space at piers is used by Driver Training School for teaching people to operate tractor-trailers, heavy equipment, motorcycles, etc. City of Bellingham sprawls in the distance beyond Whatcom Waterway. King Mountain is the hill in upper right. Haze and clouds obscure view of British Columbia's southernmost lower mainlaind. Humongous tan and grey toilet paper warehouse is flat building beyond waterway (above and slightly left of center of picture, just below green trees and above waters of the Bay), occupying several acres.
Venturing through two of the most diverse and fascinating regions of North America, these activity books combine the subjects of geology and physical geography while making them captivating and fun. With a different
approach, this series reveals the underlying processes for kids, explaining each region’s evolution and illustrating the different
forces of nature that have changed the continent over time. The lush forests of the Pacific Northwest, the dry and arid deserts of the Southwest, and even the volcanoes and rainforests of Hawaii are all explored in detail as the chapters chronicle the effects of plate tectonics; landforms such as mountains, plateaus, and canyons; and the elements of climates and ecosystems. A plethora of hands-on projects ensure the learning process is both engaging and entertaining, including making a swamp cooler, creating a rift zone, building a seismograph, constructing basalt columns and water wheels to harness the power
of a river, fashioning moving tectonic plates, and even mimicking nature’s process of carving an arch.
